Loma Vista Elementary will receive a $15,000 Project Lead the Way grant that they will receive through the years of 2019 to 2021 that will go towards purchasing the 6th grade computer science Gateway curriculum.
Project Lead the Way, or PLTW, is a nonprofit organization that provides a transformative learning experience for both students and teachers. For students the focus is to create an engaging classroom that encourages exploration and discovery and for teachers they provide training, resources, and support they need to engage students in real-world learning.
"PLTW empowers students to develop and apply in-demand, transportable skills by exploring real-world challenges. Through our pathways in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, students not only learn technical skills, but also learn to solve problems, think critically and creatively, communicate, and collaborate.”
The computer science Gateway curriculum that Loma Vista will be implementing includes design, modeling, and computer science for innovators and makers. Gateway’s curriculum is all hands-on activities, projects, and problems in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science. The program is designed to boost classroom engagement and excitement while also supporting student-led learning and teamwork. It’s goal is to inspire “aha! moments” and deep comprehension.
Kristine Carreon, Loma Vista principal, shared that the PLTW Gateway is divided into independent, nine-week units, assuming a 45-minute class period and is designed to be taught in conjunction with a challenging academic curriculum. The funds they are receiving will also support professional development for teachers to learn about implementing the program.
Sixth grade teacher, Michelle Bourret, shared, “I am excited to implement this program so that my students will be excited about science. Having taught it previously, I know the kids will love it.”
Loma Vista plans to take this program school-wide and will be using site funds to purchase the program for Kindergarten through 5th grade as well.
