Superintendent's Message

Dear Parents & Guardians,
As we move into the last trimester of the 2022-2023 school year, I would like to highlight some of the second trimester’s successes.
• Celebrating our Spelling Bee winners
• Continuing efforts to improve student daily attendance
• Final preparations for the upcoming LA County/SWSD Community Health Fair
On January 19, the District held its annual Spelling Bee Contest. Each elementary school (ES) sent at least two representatives from their respective site contests to compete in the District competition. The final results are First Place: Sakura Prieto, 6th, Carmela ES; Second Place: Aimee Ayala, 6th, Carmela ES; and Third Place: Maite Garcia, 6th, Carmela ES. Congratulations to our winners!
As I shared in my previous update, the District has put much effort into improving student attendance. This year, our goal is to reach a rate of 95% daily attendance. School attendance is important for two reasons, 1) if students are at school and on time, they are learning and are able to increase knowledge level 2) the District receives full State reimbursement for students in attendance, which in turn allows the District to offer a comprehensive educational environment. Unless your child is home sick, they should be at school and on time every day.
On May 6, the District will partner with Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn to present the annual Community Health Fair. The event will host over 30 community resource vendors. Additionally, we will have a student art display, student performances and many other fun activities. Please join us on May 6 for a wonderful day.
The above items are important and worthy of celebration, but the most important thing we do daily is educate your children. Our teachers have been working tirelessly to increase the rigor of lessons and activities. They are supported by classified and certificated support staff in this effort. Each school site is providing academic intervention support for students at every level of achievement. I visit SWSD schools regularly, and I can say with confidence that SWSD employees are working to provide the optimal learning environment for your children.
