Culinary Arts Program Comes Back To Graves Middle School

The new Culinary Arts program is in full swing at Graves Middle School teaching students the fundamentals of cooking and kitchen safety.

This program was brought back this year after it had been dormant for nearly a decade. The program was designed to pattern the California High School Culinary Arts program. Graves’ goal was to assure that their program would prepare students to be ready for Cal’s program, if they choose that path.

We are so happy to be able to offer a Culinary Arts class to our students at Graves,” principal, Dr. Fraijo, stated. "This opens the Career Tech Ed (CTE) path to students who would like to pursue careers in the culinary arts field."

In this course students learn the basics that are needed to work in the culinary field. The class covers the differences and foods in each food group, food terms and international culinary terms, leavening agents, sweetening agents, fats and oils, correct handling and storage of food, and the proper use of kitchen equipment.

Aside from terminology, students get hands-on experience following recipes and cooking their own food and desserts. Students have already baked streusels, coffee cake, cookies from scratch, and much more.
