SWSD December Board Meeting Recap

South Whittier School District held their monthly board meeting Tuesday, December 11, at the district office. Newly-elected and re-elected board members took their oath of office, the school board recognized Adelante Young Men’s Conference attendees, and there was a presentation of the first interim financial report.

Oath of Office

Superintendent, Dr. Gary Gonzales, lead the oath of office for re-elected and newly-elected school board members. Sylvia Macias and Deborah Pacheco were both re-elected for another two year term, and Natalia Barajas was newly-elected to the South Whittier School Board for the first time.

“I just want to say how excited I am,” Barajas stated. “To say that South Whittier and education has a soft spot on my heart is a bit of an understatement. I am honored and humbled to be here.”

SWSD School Board Recognized Adelante Young Men’s Conference Attendees

The school board and administration recognized a group of students from Graves Middle School who attend the Adelante Young Men’s Conference.

Graves’ principal, Dr. Fraijo, shared with board meeting attendees that the conference gives students the opportunity to hear from successful hispanic professionals. These professionals come from a variety of backgrounds including tech, first responders, and much more and they share about their own education and career journeys.

Three of the attendees spoke to board sharing about their experience at the conference and shared about what seminars they enjoyed.

First Interim Financial Report 2018-2019

Associate Superintendent of Business Services, Mark Keriakous, presented the first interim financial report for the 2018-2019 year.

The presentation went over South Whittier School District’s assumptions, budget year financial status, multi-year projections, budget stabilizations, budget calendar, and next steps.

The next board meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 15, at 6 PM at the district office.
