SWSD Presents at Hispanic Outreach Taskforce Conference

The annual Hispanic Outreach Taskforce, or HOT, Conference took place Saturday, October 13, at Katherine Edwards Middle School in Whittier to educate and instill in Latino parents the importance of their student finishing high school and graduating from a college or university.

The HOT Conference is hosted by the Hispanic Outreach Taskforce, South Whittier School District, and other school district in surrounding areas. The conference offered four different presentations that were available in both Spanish and English. South Whittier’s own George Mailat and Kenia Duarte both presented at the conference.

"Our community liaisons spent many months planning for the HOT Conference, and the presentations were a great success,” Director of Assessment, Accountability, and Parent Engagement, Stacy Ayers-Escarcega stated. “Over one-hundred families attended, and they did not want to leave the sessions-they were full of questions and experiences to share! It was great to see our families so engaged!"

The presentation topics were; College Admissions; Does a high GPA guarantee admission? Financial Aid: Free Money for College, Social Emotional Learning: An Introduction to Social Emotional Learning, 21st Century Learning: Navigating your Child’s Transition Towards Success in 21st Century Learning.

The conference also provided lunch and free child care for all attendees and had a variety of community vendors.
