The California Department of Education released the results of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC). The SBAC is the standardized state test given to all South Whittier students in grades 3-8 in the Spring. South Whittier is proud of the increased number of students who have continued to make growth on this assessment.
South Whittier students outperformed the state’s gains on both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. In the state of California, the ELA scores increased by 1.3 percentage points and Math scores increase 1.1 percentage points on the SBAC. Proudly, South Whittier School District is celebrating 3.6 percent increase in ELA and 2.95 percent increase in Math compared to last year’s scores.
Similarly, over the four years that the students have taken this test, the district has seen 10% growth in English Language arts and 6.5% growth in Math. The state has seen a 6% growth in both ELA and Math.
Percentage Increase by SWSD vs. State of California
The district is particularly proud of the gains made at Los Altos and Lake Marie Elementary Schools. The percentage gains at these two schools is quite impressive. In ELA, Lake Marie grew 15.5% in and Los Altos grew 19% in the number of students meeting and exceeding standards. Stacy Ayers, the Director of Assessment, Accountability, and Parent Engagement stated, “This type of growth is just uncommon to see in one school year. The teachers and students at these schools should be applauded for their efforts to increase student achievement. Likewise, the district growth compared to the state growth is definitely notable. South Whittier is clearly on the rise.” Dr. Gary Gonzales, Superintendent, had this to say about the scores,“Our teachers and students are working very hard and I am so very proud of the work they are doing. Every SWSD staff member, certificated & classified, is working to provide the optimal educational environment for students.”
