Get To Know Your South Whittier School Board Members
It’s the beginning of a new school year. To ensure that students, parents/guardians and the community become familiar with their Board members, the District will publish interviews with each Board member.
How long have you served as a SWSD Board member?
- I am proud to say that is my 5th year serving the South Whittier Community as A Board Member. During those five years I have served as clerk, Vice President, and President of the board.
How are you connected to SWSD?
- Like my older Brother and Sisters before me, I attended the School District and have lived in South Whittier my whole life. (Started Preschool at Carmela then attended Telechron from K-6 then SWIS AKA (Graves) from 7th-8th). I have 8 nieces and 1 nephew. The majority of them also have attended the district.
Why did you become a Board member?
- I am invested in South Whittier. I am a proud homeowner here and hope to one day have my child/children attend the same Schools that I once did. I want to be able to teach them that the best way to make a change is to get involved and make your voice heard.
To date, what has been your proudest moment or favorite memory as a Board member?
- As Board President, being at the CSBA Annual Education Conference last year and witness Graves Middle School receive the distinguishable honor of the Golden Bell Award.
What do you see as the greatest challenges facing SWSD?
- Declining enrollment which affects the District’s Budget and improving our CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) test Scores for all grade levels especially for our ESL students.
What do you see as the greatest asset(s) of SWSD?
- Dedicated Teachers and CSEA Members that are committed to the success of our students along with a strong tight-knit community and supportive and encouraging parents.
What are your aspirations for the District?
- Being able to ensure that the students of South Whittier get the best education possible. Having all of our students either meet or exceed standard as measured by the CAASPP tests.

¿Cuánto tiempo ha servido como miembro de la Junta de SWSD?
- Estoy orgulloso de decir que es mi 5° año sirviendo a la comunidad de South Whittier como miembro de la Junta de Educación. Durante esos cinco años he servido como secretario, vice presidente y presidente de la junta.
¿Cómo estás conectado a SWSD?
- Al igual que mis Hermanos y Hermanas mayores antes que yo, asistí al las escuelas dentro del Distrito Escolar y he vivido en South Whittier toda mi vida. (Inicie me educación preescolar en Carmela, luego asisti a Telechron desde el Kinder al 6°, despues a Graves Middle School, antes conocida por sus siglas en íngles SWIS para mi 7° a 8° grado. .Tengo 8 sobrinas y 1 sobrino. La mayoría de ellos también han asistido al las esceulas dentro del distrito escolar.
¿Por qué te hiciste miembro de la Junta?
- Estoy dedicado al distrito escolar de South Whittier. Soy un propietario orgulloso aquí y espero que algún día mi hijo / hijos asistan a las mismas escuelas que una vez assisti. . Quiero poder enseñarles que la mejor manera de hacer un cambio es involucrarse y hacer que se escuche su voz.
Hasta la fecha, ¿cuál ha sido tu momento de mayor orgullo o memoria favorita como miembro de la Junta?
- Como Presidente de la Junta, al asistir a la Conferencia Anual de Educación de CSBA el año pasado y ser testigo de la Escuela Secundaria Graves recibir el distinguido honor del Golden Bell Award.
¿Cuáles considera que son los mayores desafíos que enfrenta SWSD?
- Disminución de la matrícula que afecta el presupuesto del Distrito y mejorar nuestros puntajes de las pruebas conocidas por sus siglas en inglés como CAASPP (Exámenes en California para el Desempeño y Progreso Estudiantil) para todos los grados, especialmente para nuestros estudiantes de Aprendiz del Idioma Inglés, (conocido por sus siglas en inglés como ESL)
¿Cuáles considera que son el mayor recurso(s) de SWSD?
- Maestros dedicados y miembros de CSEA que están comprometidos con el éxito de nuestros estudiantes junto con una comunidad estrecha y unida y padres que apoyan y alientan.
¿Cuáles son tus aspiraciones para el Distrito?
- Poder asegurar que todos los estudiantes de South Whittier obtengan la mejor educación possible y que todos nuestros estudiantes cumplen o exceden el estándar según medido por las pruebas CAASPP.
