SWSD Families Are Taking the First Steps Towards College

Graves Middle School is hosting a workshop called Taking the First Steps Towards College for four Mondays, starting September 17th, that are open to all South Whittier School District families to learn about college programs and what it takes to get to college.

Graves’ community liaison, George Mailat, is hosting this workshop again after it’s success last year when roughly 45 different families attended the workshops. Every week covers a different topic about college. Week one focuses on how to get into college, week two is about how you can pay for college, week three focuses on how to make yourself competitive to get into the college you want, and lastly week four is about college life.

This workshop is important for all parents and students as it dives into depth about many different aspects of college and how to make choices in high school that will benefit your college goals. The first week of the workshop Mailat spoke about considering factors when looking at colleges to apply to, financial aide and the realistic cost of college, personal interest and exploring majors, application requirements, and how to make a college list.

This workshop is open to all members of the South Whittier School District community, not just those that attend Graves Middle School. Although two workshops have already taken place, there are still two more that will be held. Every workshop takes place from 5:30 PM to 7 PM.
