Graves Middle School Hosts Special Visit & Open House

Graves Middle School held their Open House and a special visitation for fourth through sixth graders and their families Thursday, April 19, to share about Graves’ academics and showcase what students have been working on and their successes.

Graves’ Middle School principal, Dr. Matt Fraijo, and assistant principal, Jamie Martinez, held a special visitation for South Whittier School District and outside families of fourth through sixth graders. This special visitation consisted of sharing about Graves’ Middle School, their achievements, programs, and student performance.

Dr. Fraijo shared how Graves has managed to have great academic success with their students. He shared with families how Graves is a Notional Demonstration AVID site, meaning they are in the top 3% of AVID schools in the nation, and how they are one of only two schools in California with a demonstration AVID excel program. Families were also informed about the school’s Advanced Math track program and their digital curricula in English Language Arts and Science.

Aside from strong academics, parents were able to learn about school programs and trips. Graves offers programs in STEM and also dual enrollment courses that allow students to gain college credits through East Los Angeles College. Dr. Fraijo also shared about how students are able to attend a Washington D.C., Boston, New York, and Philadelphia trip. Aside from the D.C. trip there is a Catalina Island and San Diego trip available for students to participate in.

In the last part of the presentation attendees were able to hear from both Graves’ parents and students about their experience at the school in all areas including academics, programs, and culture.

After this presentation, families were able to attend Graves’ open house and walk around the school. They had the opportunity to visit classrooms, speak with teachers, and see what kind of work Graves’ students have been working on.

"We really enjoyed opening GMS to our feeder schools.  We were so happy with the turnout by our 4th-6th grade students and families,” Graves’ principal Dr. Fraijo said. “Finally, we want to thank our current GMS students and parents for helping us showcase our school.  We look forward to welcoming our new Panthers in the fall."
