Los Altos Elementary Hosts Cafecito Event for Parents

Los Altos Elementary school held a Cafecito event for Spanish speaking parents on Tuesday, April 10, to share about Los Altos’ school goals and to give information about the upcoming CAASPP testing.

The event included coffee and a continental breakfast that was hosted by Principal, Genevieve Silebi, along with Community Liaison, Claudia Hernandez-Cipres. The event’s purpose is so that Principal Silebi can speak to parents about Los Altos’ mission, upcoming events, and have an opportunity to connect with Los Altos’s families, specifically Spanish speaking parents.

Principal Silebi started the presentation portion of the event by sharing Los Altos’ goals which is to prepare students for the future, teaching them to be adaptable and how to have a knowledge for unpredictable problems. After sharing the school’s goals, she began talking about the upcoming CAASPP, or California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress System.

Los Altos CAASPP testing dates will be from May 1st through the 15th and is a measurement of progress and will provide information on how teachers can improve their teaching, and how to target support for students before they fall behind.

After explaining the purpose of the test, she shared how the test is scored and the different levels of achievement and also gave examples of what kind of questions will be on the test. Parents were then given advice on how they can best help their student be successful during the testing process. They can use practice tests at home, have students eat a good breakfast, go to bed at a good hour, encourage students to persevere through difficult questions, and limit screen time at home during the testing week.

Cafecito is an event that Los Altos hosts as a way for the principal to connect with parents, specifically Spanish speakers, so they can feel connected, informed, and welcomed on campus.
