South Whittier School District school’s held transitional kindergarten and full-day kindergarten site tours through the months of January and February to give potential students and parents an insight to how the programs can help students build social and academic skills at an early age.
Los Altos principal, Genevieve Silebi, gave parents that attended her site tour, a presentation about what transitional and full-day kindergarten entails and the expectations they have for students. She shared about how teachers work with students to develop motor skills, appropriate social interactions, as well as a foundation for learning. She ended her presentation by giving parents a packet that was full of ideas for how they can best prepare their children to be ready for their step into academic learning.
After the presentation, parents were able to visit the transitional kindergarten and full-day kindergarten classrooms. They were able to see how the programs incorporate hands-on learning that includes art, reading, math, science, and social studies. The programs also help students’ early preparation for continued school success, age and developmental appropriate curriculum, and nurturing academic, social, and emotional development.
Transitional kindergarten is an early childhood education program that serves as a bridge between preschool and kindergarten and requires students to be five years of age between September 2 and December 2. Full-day kindergarten requires students to be five years of age before September 1.
Parents who are thinking of enrolling their child are welcome to attend open houses that will take place in April and May. Parents, or guardians, can enroll their child at each school from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and will need to provide a birth certificate, proof of residency in South Whittier’s boundaries, as well as immunization records.
