Lake Marie Hosts Coffee with the Principal

Lake Marie hosted a Coffee with the Principal event Friday, December 15, in the school’s multipurpose room to keep parents informed about school standards and focus areas.

Principal, Lisa Palomino, hosted the event that included a continental breakfast with coffee and juice. She spoke with parents and gave a presentation about Lake Marie’s 4 focus areas for English Language Arts, ELD and standards for mathematical practices.

Palomino shared with parents that Lake Marie’s four focus areas are effective instruction exhibiting common core “shifts”, precise academic language, student engagement, and explicit feedback. These areas are meant to promote small group instruction, teacher differentiating instruction, effective use of content and domain specific academic vocabulary, structured collaboration and conversations, and lastly, explicit corrective with student opportunity to apply when they have been corrected.

The purpose of these focus areas are meant to promote success for students beyond the academic stand point.

“Having our students present to each other and their class helps foster the love for learning, but also their confidence, “ principal, Lisa Palomino, stated.

Aside from these specific focus areas, teachers are participating in professional development to work on strategies to help students be successful. For students, the school is implementing after school small groups that give students the opportunity to work with their teachers in a smaller more individual setting. Lake Marie has also implemented a technology academy, giving students the opportunity to learn how to code.

Principal, Lisa Palomino, plans on holding more Coffee with the Principal events in the future to continue open communication relationships with parents.
