South Whittier School District December Board Meeting Recap

South Whittier School District held their monthly board meeting Tuesday, December 12, at the district office. The board was able to express their positive feedback regarding district events that have taken place this past month.

 

Jan Baird Named New South Whittier School Board President

 

As the current president of the school board, Francisco Javi Santana, stepped down, Jan Baird was named new South Whittier School Board President. 

 

“I wanted to thank my fellow board members for assistance and helping me through the process,” Santana said. “This was my first time as president and I thank you for the support.”

 

“I want to thank Javi for the great job that he did for us. It was a show of leadership and I appreciate that,” new board Vice President, Deb Pacheco stated.

 

Francisco Javi Santana will remain on the school board as a member.

SWSD Board Recognizes Carmela Students for Exceeding Standards on CAASPP Test

 

Carmela Elementary presented to the board and administrators 12 students that were recognized for exceeding standards on the CAASPP, or California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, test in English Language Arts and Math. 

 

The 12 students were given certificates of achievement and spoke to the board about their own personal education and professional goals. 

 

“Carmela’s goal is to work on academic skills and character traits to be college focused,” Carmela’s principal, Dr. Trena Gonzalez, stated.

 

Many students spoke on their desire to go to universities like Stanford and UCLA. 

 

Graves Honored at Golden Bell Award Ceremony

 

This past month Graves Middle School was honored at the Golden Bell award ceremony in San Diego for their excellence in education. Dr. Fraijo, Graves’ principal, South Whittier’s superintendent, Dr. Gonzales, and members of the board were all in attendance. 

 

“This is the first time in the district’s history that the district received the Golden Bell award, and this will be the first of many, “ superintendent, Dr. Gonzales, stated. “An outstanding award and a congratulations to Matt Fraijo and his staff.”

 

“This is something for the entire district. It shows that this is what the district is about. Those that are in education, those who are leaders, don’t take this lightly,” school board Vice President, Deb Pacheco stated. “We can be proud.”
