Graves Middle School hosted its annual AVID Student Portfolio Day on Friday, May 23, offering eighth-grade AVID students a platform to showcase their academic growth and personal development.
During the event, each student presented a curated portfolio highlighting their best work. Their portfolio included projects that reflected their academic achievements and personal journey. Students participated in two formal interviews, where they discussed their selected work, explained their decision-making process, and shared insights about their strengths, goals, and key sources of support.
Interviewers evaluated students on professionalism, eye contact, enthusiasm, composure, and the depth and clarity of their responses. Each student received meaningful feedback through both verbal comments and a “Glows and Grows” form, which gave praise and suggestions for continued growth.
The event welcomed an impressive group of interviewers from across the community, including representatives from the Boys and Girls Club, Rio Hondo College, local professionals, and Graves Middle School alumni. South Whittier School District leadership, including Cabinet members, principals, classified managers, teachers, and school board members, were also in attendance to support and interview the students.
Each interview lasted 10 to 15 minutes, providing students a valuable opportunity to develop professional communication skills, gain confidence, and engage with community leaders in a meaningful way.
Graves Middle School’s AVID Portfolio Day continues to be a testament to the district’s commitment to college and career readiness, and to empowering students through real-world learning experiences.
