South Whittier School District held its annual Health + Wellness Fair in partnership with Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn on Saturday, May 3, at Carmela Elementary School.
The event began with opening remarks from Supervisor Janice Hahn’s office. The representative welcomed attendees and encouraged participation in the countless free resources. South Whittier School District Superintendent, Dr. Gary Gonzales, then addressed attendees, sharing how the district strategically partners with the community to support families and students, stating, “Together with family and the district, we can create opportunities and have a quality education for our students.”
This annual event brings community partners and resources directly to residents and community members. This year, the fair partnered with dozens of local organizations, including the LA County Library, Think Together, California Highway Patrol, Vision to Learn, the LA County Department of Public Health, and many others.
Free services were also available to attendees, including free vaccines from LA County Public Health, vision testing through Vision to Learn, and free haircuts from Cosmetica Beauty and Barbering Academy.
The fair also showcased South Whittier School District schools and programs. Each SWSD school hosted a booth, and the district’s Visual and Performing Arts Program (VAPA) performed for attendees. Performances included songs from the SWSD mariachi group, music performances, and dance performances. Students did an amazing job performing songs that included Cielito Lindo, Eye of the Tiger, and dancing to Michael Jackson’s ABCs and much more.
Attendees could explore exhibits that included a student art exhibit and robotics. The art exhibit showcased some extraordinary student work by students from all grade levels. The robotics exhibit allowed attendees to exercise their programming skills. Lastly, the district P.E. program held fun sports games and contests for participants to win prizes.
