South Whittier School District held its second meeting of a series of Literacy Committee meetings on Tuesday, April 1, to receive input regarding a literacy campaign for the 2025-2026 school year.
This meeting invited parents, families, teachers, and community members to share their input and feedback in helping create and shape the literacy campaign geared towards exciting students and families about the joy of reading.
During this meeting, attendees were able to finalize the literacy campaign vision statement, identify focus areas for students, staff, and the community, begin outlining specific action ideas aligned to focus areas and provide ideas for branding and themes.
Dr. Rebecca Rodriguez, Associate Superintendent of Educational Services, began the meeting by providing an overview and recap of the purpose of the literacy campaign and the previous meeting. She then had attendees break up into groups and provide and discuss edits and input toward the campaign’s vision statement. Each group then shared their input and feedback.
Attendees then discussed ideas for literacy events for students and families that would provide excitement around reading. They discussed resources the District would need to support these literacy events and discussed community partners who could support these efforts.
After discussion and input, attendees were able to share their ideas for the literacy campaign’s slogan, motto, and theme.
Future literacy campaign meetings will be held on April 22 and May 20.
