South Whittier School District held their monthly board meeting on Tuesday, November 12th. The Board and attendees heard three presentations. A recognition to the Office of Janice Hahn and the Assistance League of Whittier, a Loma Vista Student Achievement Report, and a SWSD Academic Achievement Report.
Recognition: Operation School Bell - Office of Janice Hahn & The Assistance League of Whittier
Director of Community Schools, Ms. Karina Hartl, recognized the Office of Janice Hahn and the Assistance League of Whittier for their support through Operation School Bell.
Operation School Bell is a program that provides students with Target vouchers that can be used on new school clothes. This year the program served 119 students in South Whittier School District. The Office of Janice Hahn provided a grant that funded the program along with funds and efforts from the Assistance League.
Loma Vista Student & Academic Achievement Report
Loma Vista Principal, Kristine Carreon, recognized students who were English Learners but have reclassified. She shared how these students have worked very hard to achieve their goals and now have opened themselves up to even more opportunities.
After the recognition, Ms. Carreon gave a report on student achievement at Loma Vista. This report shared CAASPP data in English Language Arts and Math, sharing that they have seen improvement in both areas. She then shared ELPAC data and how Loma is supporting English Learners. The presentation then covered intervention support, SMART goals, collective commitments, positive behavioral interventions and supports, and how they have worked towards a positive school climate, culture, and social emotional supports.
Ms. Carreon shared how the teachers and staff at Loma Vista have gone above and beyond by investing in their students and being committed to professional development assuring that students receive the best first instruction.
SWSD Student Academic Achievement Report
Dr. Reanna Mendoza, Director of Assessment, Accountability, and Parent Engagement, gave an Educational Services Update.
This update shared student achievement which include CAASPP student data in both ELA and Math. She went on to show year over year progress in data scores which showed student achievement is in a positive trajectory. She went on to discuss although scores are improving there is still much work to be done to make up for learning loss during the Covid pandemic.
The presentation continued by showing English Learner data which also displayed positive growth in scores. Lastly, the report showed how South Whittier scores compare to surrounding district. This comparison showed that SWSD has displayed comparable growth that is in line with what other district’s have been achieving.
