SWSD October Board Meeting Recap

South Whittier School District held their monthly board meeting on Tuesday, October 15th, in-person in the District board room and via Zoom..

 

The Board heard six recognitions and presentations. The first was a Teacher of the Year recognition, Classified Employee of the Year recognition, Los Altos student and academic achievement report, Title 1 Parent Conference sponsors recognition, 2023-2024 California PBIS Implementation awards, and a Lease - Leaseback presentation.

 

2024-2025 Teacher of the Year Recognition

 

Associate Superintendent of Human Resources, Dr, Ayala, presented Teacher of the Year, Flor Garcia, with a certificate of achievement. She shared a nomination letter that Ms. Garcia had received that boasted her passion for students, her dedication and hard work, her ability to create a welcoming and loving environment for all students, and much more.

2024-2025 Classified Employee of the Year Recognition

 

Associate Superintendent of Human Resources, Dr. Ayala, presented Classified Employee of the Year, Brenda Venegas, with a certificate of achievement. Ms. Veneers is the District’s Community Liaison.

 

Dr. Ayala shared how Ms. Venegas has built and nurtured the relationships between the District and families. Congratulations, Ms. Venegas!

 

Los Altos Student & Academic Achievement Recognition & Report

 

Los Altos Elementary Principal, Ms. Silebi, recognized ten students who were English Learners but have reclassified. She shared how these students have worked very hard to achieve their goals and now have opened themselves up to even more opportunities. 

 

She then went on to present the Los Altos Elementary Achievement Report. This report went over data and results from CAASPP and ELPAC testing. She demonstrated how students have shown proven growth over time in both English Language Arts (ELA) and math. She then shared how her teachers have been dissecting the data and collaborating to create goals and next steps to further student academic achievement. 

 

Title 1 Parent Conference Sponsor Recognition

 

Director of Community Schools, Karina Hartl, recognized the community partners who were sponsors at the District’s Title 1 Parent Conference.

2023-2024 California PBIS Implementation Awards

 

Wellness Services Program Specialist, Cynthia Casebere, and Director of Assessments, Accountability, and Parent Engagement, Dr. Reanna Mendoza, recognized all six South Whittier School District Schools for the recognition they have received from California PBIS. Schools can be recognized as Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum PBIS schools.

Lease - Leaseback Presentation

 

The Board heard a presentation from F3 Law regarding a lease-leaseback project delivery method. 

 

Under CA law, a school district may use the LLB construction delivery method to construct a building(s) on property owned by the District pursuant to a lease of the land to a contractor for a set term to allow for project construction. (Ed. Code, §17400, et seq.)

 

The presenters explained the method and requirements. They went on to explain that in addition to informing the Board members of the process they are also able to assist the Board of Trustees with determining an available delivery method for the District’s Measure K Bond Program Projects, as well as for non-bond related projects.

 

The District will hold their next board meeting on Tuesday, November 12, at the District office and via Zoom.
