South Whittier School District held their annual Title 1 Parent Conference on Saturday, September 14, at the Family Resource Center at Monte Vista.
This conference focused on providing educational and informative workshops as well as resources for parents in an effort to support families and their students.
The day started with coffee and refreshments and the workshop opened with a welcome from South Whittier Superintendent, Dr. Gary Gonzales. He shared how the purpose of the conference was to support parents knowing how the partnership between the district and families has a direct impact on student success.
“We are all here to support you. Whether it’s today or the remainder of the year, please talk to any one of us, because we are all here for you. I hope you enjoy today, the sessions are going to be really great! Thank you for being here.”
After Dr. Gonzales’ welcome, Director of Community Schools, Karina Hartl, welcomed parents, introduced each school principal and community liaison, and gave a brief presentation about the Community Schools grant. After her presentation parents were able to break off into their first session of the day. Each attendee had the opportunity to attend two sessions of their choice. Sessions addressed important issues including supporting foundational reading skills, regulating emotions, mental health, understanding the steps for reclassification, writers workshop, and how to support your middle schooler. There was also a group session that showed parents how to navigate and monitor educational applications students use.
In addition to the workshops, there was a raffle and a resource fair that attendees were able to visit during breaks and lunch. The community partners at the resource fair included California Highway Patrol, The Whole Child, Pacific Clinics, The Boys & Girls Club of Whittier, Think Together, among others.
In an effort to support families to be able to attend the conference, the district provided child care and made sure that child care included a fun and educational atmosphere. California Highway Patrol brought their motorcycles and two police cars for kids to explore. The kids were able to explore the vehicles, talk with the officers, and each child received a sticker badge and bracelet.
The Title 1 Conference is an annual event that South Whittier provides in a continued effort to support families in academics and beyond. They believe that success is possible for every student and educators and families working together is key.
