SWSD Hosts Impactful Professional Development Day for Teachers & Staff

South Whittier School District teachers and staff participated in a professional development day on Wednesday, August 14th, at Graves Middle School in order to kick off the new year and gear up to welcome students and families.

The professional development day was an impactful and motivating day that began with breakfast and a welcome from SWSD Superintendent, Dr. Gary Gonzales. Dr. Gonzales shared with attendees how teachers are much like olympic coaches training their athletes to reach and unlock their highest potential. He acknowledged the challenge that being a teacher brings, but also shared the wonderful and lasting impact it has on students and communities.

“The knowledge students gain here at South Whittier lasts a lifetime. Let’s do our best so that every student is able to achieve their highest potential and feel confident. I wish each of you a successful school year.”

Attendees then got to hear from Teacher of the Year, Flor Garcia. Ms. Garcia shared her own story growing up in South Whittier and the impact her teachers had on her life. How they made her feel safe, seen, and validated. She shared with her peers her journey to becoming a teacher and those who helped her along the way. She shared her desire to create a space where students are embraced for who they are and her determination to advocate for equity as she believes education is a key determination to future success.

Next, Classified Employee of the Year, Brenda Venegas, who is the district’s Community Liaison, spoke to attendees. Ms. Venegas shared her mission to build a strong community where everyone is supported and empowered and how it takes everyone working together to make that happen.

Following the speakers, teachers and staff broke into their respected departments and groups to receive training on various software and applications used, ask questions, and collaborate with one another.
