SWSD 6th Graders Visit Graves Middle School

South Whittier School District sixth graders visited Graves Middle School on Friday, March 10, in preparation of graduating elementary school and moving on to middle school.

 

All South Whittier elementary schools attended the Graves Middle School visit. During the visit students got to hear a presentation from GMS principal, Mr. Marquez. Mr Marquez introduced GMS support staff, counselors, social worker, and instructional coach. He then shared about Graves sharing information regarding class sizes, after school programs, interventions, enrichment opportunities, and electives. This included after school tutoring, college classes, sports, the TLC program, and much more.

 

During the presentation students also head about GMS student expectations. This consisted of having Panther pride, being ready to learn, having materials ready, and being kind and respectful. Lastly, students got to see how the middle school schedule works and how it differs from their current elementary school schedules. 

 

After the presentation students had some friendly competition and got to participate in a some games that the GMS ASB put together. They had a basketball shoot off and the winner went toe to toe with principal, Marquez. They also got to play a plenko game that had some fun prizes.

 

Students were then able to take a tour of the campus and enjoy Pizza Hut for lunch. After lunch students walked through the elective fair. The elective fair was an opportunity for students to explore electives, ask questions, and begin deciding what electives they would want to take in middle school. The fair included band, coding, journalism, medical core, AVID, college and career journey, health and sports, ASB, life 360, and more.
