SWSD Parent Receives WASA Community Services Award

South Whittier School District parent, Mrs. Franco, was awarded the WASA Community Service Award earlier this month.

WASA, or the Whittier Association for School Administrators, recognizes exceptional individuals annually. Their award “recognizes outstanding educational administrators and individuals in other professions who have made extraordinary contributions to K–12 education.”

Mrs. Franco is a parent to students at both McKibben and Carmela Elementary. She is actively involved in both elementary school’s events and district events. She regularly attends Coffee with the Superintendent, the Title 1 Parent Conference, and monthly board meetings. Franco also holds Counsel positions at both McKibben and Carmela Elementary and volunteers her time in addition to her Counsel requirements.

Franco is also actively engaged in the South Whittier community. She is an advocate for children and has been a voice for autism awareness. The award nomination submission shared, “Her advocacy goes beyond her own children; she advocates for all children regardless of ability. She is accepting of advice and guidance and will work to learn from it and apply it to constructive purposes. She is always appreciative of everyone who has helped her children have success in school.”

Carmela principal, Karina Hartl, and McKibben principal, Janette Tyrone, both shared, “Her energy is contagious and her presence is apparent. She is a great example of what a strong and present role model parent is. We appreciate the partnership and open communication that Mrs. Franco has developed with both McKibben and Carmela staff.”

Thank you, Mrs. Franco, for your hard work and dedication to the students and families of South Whittier School District!
