Loma Vista 5th Graders Get Hands-On With Squid Dissection

Loma Vista Elementary partnered with Cabrillo Marine Aquarium to bring sea life and science to Loma Vista students.

For a full week, the aquarium brought grade appropriate workshops to students. Students learned all about sea life, adaptations, habitats, the biology and anatomy of animals, and much more. Each workshop included a presentation and interactive hands-on lesson.

Fifth and sixth grade students got to practice being scientists themselves by participating in fish and squid dissections. Fifth grade students dissected squids and sixth grade students dissected fish. Students were guided by a Cabrillo Marine biologist who walked students step-by-step on how to dissect the animal. They would also stop to talk through the anatomy of their animal as well as learning about the purpose of each organ.

Fifth grade students dissecting squids got to learn about how the anatomy of the squid helps them survive in their habitat. After students were shown a particular organ on a diagram they were guided on how to dissect the animal, and find the organ. The biologist also disused with students conservation issues and truths and myths about squids.
