South Whittier School District held their District Spelling Bee on Thursday, January 19, at Loma Vista Elementary.
Spelling Bee contestants consisted of the top four spellers from each elementary school in the district. Students in grades fourth through sixth were able to participate. The district first implemented a Spelling Bee in 2019 but has not been able to host the event the past couple years due to the pandemic. This year was the first year the district was able to bring it back.
During the event all participants went through many vigorous rounds, but in the end, the top three spellers in the district were awarded. All three top spellers were from Carmela Elementary.
First Place: Sakura Prieto
Second Place: Aimee Ayala
Third Place: Maite Garcia
The first place winner of the District Spelling Bee typically moves on to represent South Whittier in the County Spelling Bee, however, this year the County Spelling Bee has been canceled. Nonetheless, South Whittier School District honors our district’s top speller and all the participating scholars.
