SWSD December Board Meeting Recap

South Whittier School District held their monthly board meeting on Tuesday, December 13, at the district office and via Zoom.

 

This month the board had their swearing in of three board members and heard three presentations. The first was the Above and Beyond Recognition award, the second was the Golden Bell awarded to our district mental health team, and lastly the 2022-2023 first interim report.

 

Swearing in of Board Members 

 

Board members Dr. Natalia Barajas, Sylvia Macias, and Francisco Santana took their oath of office as they were sworn in for another four year term. There was also a reorganization of the board.

 

Board positions are now as follows:

 

Elias Alvarado - President

Sylvia V. Macias - Vice President

Jan Baird - Clerk

Dr. Natalia Barajas - Board Member

Francisco Santana - Board Member

 

Above & Beyond Award

 

This month the district honored Mr. Ron Hernandez, Carmela Elementary’s custodian of 29 years, with the Above & Beyond award. 

 

Multiple peers wrote to the district nominating Mr. Ron sharing that he always makes sure everything on campus is in working order. They also shared that students actively look for him on campus and look forward to his daily jokes. Mr. Ron will be retiring at the end of the month and the Carmela community will greatly miss his presence on campus.

Golden Bell Award

 

South Whittier School District’s mental health team was award with the Golden Bell award. There are over 1,000 district throughout California and SWSD was one of only 53 districts that were awarded with the Golden Bell.

 

The Golden Bell award promotes excellence in education and school board governance by recognizing outstanding programs and governance practices throughout California. Golden Bell Awards reflect the depth and breadth of education programs and governance decisions supporting these programs that are necessary to address students’ changing needs.

 

“In a short time they have done amazing work with students, staff, and families,” SWSD Superintendent, Dr. Gonzales, shared. “This is very well deserved.”

2022-2023 First Interim Report

 

Associate Superintendent of Business Services, Aubrey Craig, gave a presentation regarding the first interim report for 2022-2023. This reports presents the district’s financial position as of October 31, 2022. This report also certifies the district’s financial status to the County.

 

During the presentation Mr. Craig went over the revenue and expenditure assumptions, the budget year financial status that included both the restricted and unrestricted budgets, multi-year projections, ending balance components, and recommendations and next steps. 

 

The findings of the report did find that the staff recommends a positive certification of the report.

 

 

The district will hold their next board meeting on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 in the district board room and via Zoom.
