SWSD Partners with Norwalk Sheriff Station to Host Fighting Fentanyl Together Event

South Whittier School District partnered with the Norwalk Sheriff’s station to host a Fighting Fentanyl Together event and discussion at Graves Middle School on Thursday, November 17th.

This event was an important informational session on the current fentanyl crisis. During the presentation portion of the event, attendees got to hear from Norwalk Sheriff’s narcotics captain, Captain Brown. He shared statistics regarding fentanyl and the increase of use and overdoses, signs of what being under the influence of fentanyl may look like, and tips on how to talk to your children and keep them safe.

Captain Brown shared that social media is the biggest way that people communicate regarding drug related exchanges, and encouraged parents to know what is on their child’s phone and who they’re talking to.

The next speaker attendees had the opportunity to hear from, was the Assistant Medical Director of the LA County Fire Department, Dr. Kupta. Dr. Kupta shared truths and myths regarding fentanyl and shared facts and actions that could help save a life. He then spoke about narcan, which is a medication that can counteract fentanyl. He then showed how to administer narcan, in the event that someone overdosed.

The last speakers of the evening were two substance abuse counselors who spoke on recognizing and responding to an overdose.

After the speakers gave their presentations, there were opportunities for attendees to ask questions. There were also a number of Sheriffs at the event that gave out information and pamphlets.
