SWSD March Board Meeting Recap

South Whittier School District held their monthly board meeting on Tuesday, March 8, at the district office.

This meeting was held both in-person and via Zoom. The board and attendees were able to hear three presentations. There was a presentation on SWSD’s after school program, an academic data update, and the 2021-2022 second interim report.

After School Program Presentation

Associate Superintendent, Dr. Rebecca Rodriguez, along with a representative from Think Together, shared data regarding Think Together, the after school program that is available at all South Whittier schools.

They shared that Think Together is an after school program that offers homework support, fitness and skill-building opportunities. They promote strong relationships and emotional support while focusing on promoting equity, well-being and connection through enrichment activities.

In the winter of 2021 students grades 3 through 6 at all elementary sites were surveyed on nationally benchmarked social-emotional learning competencies focused on self-efficacy, self-management, self-awareness, and engagement. Dr. Rodriguez shared the survey findings that showed our students rated comparable and at times above average in comparison to national findings. The data also showed that students felt safe and supported through the program and parents felt the program provided great services and new experiences for their students.

Academic Update Data Presentation

Dr. Rebecca Rodriguez gave the board a presentation updating them on the academic progress of students.

The presentation gave data regarding the number of students tested, the percentage of students at or above proficiency, and the average scale score for reading and math. Overall the data showed that students made exceptional gains particularly in math and in kindergarten foundational skills. In math students in all categories made substantial gains from the beginning of the year.

Kindergartners also made substantial strides. In the beginning of the year only 12% of students were meeting proficiency and by trimester two 42% were meeting proficiency. Kindergarten EL learners also made exceptional progress. In the beginning of the year 10% were at proficiency and by the end of trimester two, 61% were at proficiency.

2021-2022 Second Interim Report

Associate Superintendent off Business Services, Aubrey Craig, shared the 2021-2022 second interim report. This information shows the District’s position as of January 31, 2022.

Craig presented revenue and expenditure assumptions, the budget year financial status, multi-year projections, ending balance components, and the recommendation and next steps. After all data was presented it was recommended to accept a positive certification of the interim report.

The District will hold their next board meeting on Tuesday, April 19, in the District board room and via Zoom.
