South Whittier School District held their monthly board meeting on Tuesday, October 19, at the district office. This was their first in-person board meeting since the beginning of the pandemic.
Attendees, both in-person and on Zoom, were able to hear about the latest Above & Beyond award recipient and hear comments from board members. No presentations took place at this month’s meeting.
Above & Beyond Award
This month’s Above & Beyond award recipient was McKibben Elementary’s Secretary, Janett Romero.
Superintendent, Dr. Gonzales, read the nomination for Ms. Romero. It shared how she always has a smile on her face and a kind word to give. It went on to say how Romero constantly works hard making sure every phone call gets answered and all tasks are taken care of.
Several board members expressed their congratulations to Ms. Romero on her award, including board member, Sylvia Macias.
“I’d like to congratulate Ms. Romero for receiving the Above and Beyond award. Being a Secretary is a very demanding job and we appreciate you making sure all those calls get answered. A Secretary really does take care of everybody.”

Comments from the SWSD Board
SWSD Board President, Jan Baird, expressed her excitement to have students and teachers back in the classroom for in-person learning. She then thanked teachers, staff members, and students for coming back.
Vice President, Natalia Barajas, welcomed everyone back including the 25 attendees who like her, joined the board meeting via Zoom. She then went on to congratulate Above & Beyond award recipient, Janett Romero, for all the hard work she does for McKibben and for always doing it with a smile.
Board Clerk, Deborah Pacheco, shared her excitement for holding the board meeting in person sharing, “It’s nice seeing everyone face to face!”
Board member, Elias Alvarado, gave a welcome and encouraged everyone to attend the District event, Coffee with the Superintendent, that is taking place on Thursday, October 21. He shared how this event is a valuable time to ask questions and to hear from the superintendent himself. He also shared that this event will feature a guest speaker.
Board member, Sylvia Macias, welcomed everyone back and gave a big congratulations to Above & Beyond award recipient, Janett Romero. She went on to share about the professional development day that she attended and how impressed she was by South Whittier teachers. She talked about how great the event was and how involved and invested the teachers who attended the event were.
