Loma Vista Students Learn About Dental Care Through “To Tell the Tooth”

Loma Vista Elementary 2nd graders got a visit from the Assistance League of Whittier on Wednesday, February 12, to learn about the importance of good dental hygiene through a puppet show called “To Tell The Tooth”.

This puppet show introduced many characters including Sugarbug, the Green Plaque Monster, Dr. Hoo and many others. Each character shared important information, both good and bad, about dental hygiene. Students learned about how candy and drinks with a lot of sugar can be harmful to their teeth. They also learned about food that can help strengthen their teeth and keep them healthy.

The puppet Dr. Hoo, who is an owl and a dentist, shared with students about how to properly care for their teeth. Students saw a demonstration on how to properly brush and floss and heard how important it is to visit the dentist at least twice a year.

After the show the Assistance League of Whittier gave students goodie bags. The goodie bags included a tooth brush, tooth paste, floss, and a card with information with local dentists that works with the Assistance League.

The League works with seven local dentists and a dental surgeon to provide care to those who need it in the local community. They shared that if a student’s family is unable to afford dental care they can contact them and will help them obtain those services.

“To Tell the Tooth” will visit all elementary schools in South Whittier School District.

The Assistance League of Whittier is a non-profit organization that is made entirely of volunteers. Their vision is, “To work as a team assisting Greater Whittier Area residents to become healthier and better educated through our philanthropic and fundraising activities.”
