SWSD January Board Meeting Recap

South Whittier School District held their monthly board meeting Tuesday, January 21, at the district office. There were three presentations that took place. The first was a recognition of achievement from Loma Vista. The second presentation was about Graves Middle School and their action plan. Lastly, the board was able to hear the 2018-2019 financial audit report.

 

Loma Vista Student Recognition

 

Loma Vista Elementary principal, Kristine Carreon, recognized students who have reclassified from English Language Learners. Students that were recognized received a certificate and a pin as a symbol for their hard work and achievement.

 

Loma Vista Retiree Recognition

 

Loma Vista Elementary honored their custodian, Jim White, who will be retiring at the end of February. Mr. White has been working for South Whittier School District for 33 years. Loma Vista principal, Kristine Carreon, thanked him for all of his hard work and dedication that he has shown over the years and expressed how much he will be missed by everyone in the Loma Vista and South Whittier community.

Graves Middle School Action Plan Presentation

 

Graves Middle School principal, Dr. Trena Salcedo-Gonzalez, gave a presentation about California Assessment and Student Performance and Progress, or CAASPP, data and the action plan moving forward.

 

Dr. Gonzalez talked about areas of achievement and area of growth in both English Language Arts and Math. She then spoke about the action plan that GMS has put in place and how they will monitor student progress. 

 

The action plan to improve academic achievement includes; pacing guides in all grades and all departments, common assessments, implementing Plan Do Analyze and Reflect cycles, implementing AVID and WICOR strategies, data discussions, a common grading policy, a CAASPP emphasis, and creating a positive school culture.

 

The presentation also highlighted how GMS has made equity based decisions with scholar focus, has implemented intervention opportunities, and has made a PBIS emphasis and tier III interventions.

 

2018-2019 Financial Audit Report

 

The last presentation was made by a representative from Eide Bailly, a CPA firm, who conducted the 2018-2019 financial audit report.

 

The intent of the annual audit is to encourage sound fiscal management practices for the most efficient and effective use of public funds for the education of children in California by strengthening fiscal accountability at the district, county and state levels. The annual audit report is used by various agencies to review the fiscal status of the district.

 

Eide Bailly completed the audit for the 2018-2019 fiscal year and all findings were positive and clean.

 

The next board meeting will be on Tuesday, February 18, at 6 PM at the district office.
