SWSD Hosts Coffee With the Superintendent Event

South Whittier School District held a Coffee with the Superintendent event on Tuesday, January 21, in the district board room to share with parents and the community about what is happening in the district and to hear from attendees.

The event began with attendees being able to enjoy pastries and coffee. South Whittier Superintendent, Dr. Gary Gonzales, then began the event with a welcome and thanking attendees for participating in their student’s education. He encouraged everyone to continue being involved and to provide their input so the district can continue to meet the needs of students and their families.

“The most important thing in this district is educating your kids. But we need your input. It’s so very important,” Dr. Gonzales shared.

The next presentation was by Dr. Stacy Ayers the Director of Assessment, Accountability, and Parent Engagement. She shared about the English Language Proficiency Assessments, or ELPAC, that are coming up and talked about South Whittier’s California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, or CAASPP, scores, and the California Dashboard. She talked about how attendees can read the California Dashboard, went over markers on how schools are evaluated, and shared resources.

Associate Superintendent of Educational Services, Martha Mestanza-Rojas, presented next and shared with parents an infographic that had vital information about the LCAP, or Local Control and Accountability Plan. Attendees were able to see district goals, where money is allocated, and showed parents how to access resources on the district website with important information.

Mrs. Rojas closed her presentation by encouraging parents to participate in the LCAP survey that is currently open and is available on the district website. Attendees were also invited to the LCAP parent meeting that will be held on February 26 at 6 p.m. in the district board room.

In closing attendees were able to hear what the district has done and is currently doing to address concerns that were brought up from the last Coffee with the Superintendent event. They were then given time to share any new concerns or suggestions they had.
