Loma Vista Elementary held a Science Night at their school on Thursday, January 9, to educate students and parents about the scientific process to help prepare them for their upcoming science project.
Science Night is an annual event with the purpose of educating students and parents about the scientific method, provide hands-on experience conducting experiments, provide ideas for future areas of study, and to motivate and inspire students for their upcoming project.
All attendees were given a packet when they arrived with critical information regarding the scientific process and important information about their science project. A presentation was then given by 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Radley. She shared about the “problem” or the question that the students will be exploring and learning about. She went on to explain expectations for student’s research, hypothesis, materials, procedures, results, and conclusions.
Mrs. Radley also shared that even if a student’s experiment does not work out they will not be marked down. They will only need to explain what went wrong.
“You learn from both success and from what went wrong”, Mrs. Radley shared.
At the end of the presentation students were given instructions on how to create their science journals and put together their display boards.
After the presentation attendees were able to participate in a variety of hands-on experiments. There were eight experiments total including the dissolving rate of a solid, expansion size of gas, strength of a magnet, the best sound medium, light refraction, the force of gravity, acid and base pH levels, and how length affects the pitch of sound.
