Carmela Elementary Hosts Coffee With the Principal Event

Carmela Elementary held a Coffee with the Principal event on Thursday, November 21, at their school.

Carmela principal, Karina Hartl, held the event for parents. Attendees were able to enjoy coffee and refreshments and hear from their student’s principal.

Mrs. Hartl’s main topic for this event was PBIS and Carmela rules and expectations of students. She shared that PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support. Parents got to hear about the many ways students are rewarded and recognized for their positive behavior.

One way students are recognized is through their school Spirit Assemblies. Students are recognized at their assemblies for displaying their school’s character trait of the month. Every month Carmela has a new character trait that students learn about. Character traits include determination, grit, integrity, curiosity, self control, and many others. For example, this month’s character trait students are learning about is gratitude.

When students display strong character and positive behavior they also are rewarded with Dolphin Dollars. These Dolphins Dollars can be used at Carmela’s Dolphin Store where students can buy a variety of prizes.

Aside from PBIS, Hartl talked about school rules and expectations of students. She shared Carmela’s school rules which are to be responsible, be respectful, and to be safe. Parents were able to see student expectations of how to put these rules into practice is academic settings, on the playground, before school, and in the hallways.

Hartl also shared with parents ways they could support their student both in and outside of the classroom. She gave ideas on how parents could partner with their student’s school and continue the education their student is learning at school at home.

After the presentation portion of the event Mrs. Hartl gave parents time to ask questions, voice concerns, and talk about future topics they would like to learn more about.
