Parent Center Spotlight: November

Developing Gratitude

Every school in South Whittier School District is focusing their character education program to develop “Gratitude” in our students during the month of November.  What is is “Gratitude”? This means that a child will show acts of appreciation towards others.

How to Help Gratitude Grow in Your Kids

Research shows that if parents show appreciation towards others then they will develop children who also express more gratitude.

Here are a few ways you can foster this trait at home:

  • Help students understand their own feelings and the feelings of others.
  • Remind older children that adults are sources of support for them. Point out how adults are providers and advisors that should be appreciated.
  • Provide children opportunities to volunteer or give back to the community.
  • Talk with your child about how they can express gratitude such as saying “thank you”, writing a special note of appreciation, or drawing a picture to show kindness. Challenge them to identify their own ways of showing gratitude.
