Lake Marie Elementary Presentation

Lake Marie principal, Lisa Palomino, presented an overview of student data, goals, and an action plan to the school board.

Palomino shared English Language Arts (ELA) and Math data from CAASPP, or California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, testing. She showed data for grades 3rd through 6th and English Learners for the past four years in order to evaluate growth and needs of extra support.

The presentation showed key data points from CAASPP. This included that last year’s 6th graders average scale score increased in ELA with an improvement of 115 scale score points over time. 5th grade also saw an improvement in their average scale score by 85 points since 3rd grade. In math, last year’s 6th graders average scale score increased from 2403 to 2482. This is an improvement of 78 scale score points over time, and 5th grade English Learner’s average scale score has increased 60 scale score points, compared to 59 for all students. This is an indicator that Lake Marie is closing the achievement gap.

Lake Marie set two ELA goals. First, that 3rd through 6th grade students will improve their Language Arts proficiency by decreasing the number of students scoring in the “Not Met” level by 10% on CAASPP. Goal two is that Lake Marie 3rd through 6th grade students will increase the number of students scoring in the “Met” level in Language Arts by increasing by 10% on CAASPP.

Their Math goals for 3rd through 6th grade students are that they will improve math proficiency by decreasing the number of students scoring at the “Not Met” level by 10% on CAASPP. Second, students will increase the number of students scoring at the “Met” level in math by 10% on CAASPP.

In order to reach these goals they have put together an action plan and a monitoring of student achievement. The plan includes instructional coach support, designated ELD focused on providing language support for students to access Language Arts content, G.L.A.D., Thinking Maps, targeted comprehension strategies, an intervention teacher, progress monitoring through various systems, after school interventions, and much more.

The next board meeting will be on Tuesday, November 12, at 6 PM at the district office.
