Developing Zest
Every school in South Whittier School District is focusing their
character education program to focus on developing “zest” in
our students during the month of October. What is is “zest”?
This means that a child will embrace each day with enthusiasm
and approach the day with excitement.
How can I help my child develop “Zest”?
Children are naturally energetic and zestful. However, even the
most enthusiastic individuals experience low energy at some
point. There are some tricks to having a little more zest in life.
Here are a few ways you can foster this trait at home:
- Zest can be found in the beautiful things around us. Watch a sunset, pick some flowers, or listen to a musical instrument.
- Promote healthy lifestyle choices: eating a meal slowly and together. Go on a walk together or promote daily physical activity.
- Build enthusiasm for life through storytelling, cooking, reading a graphic novel, surprise gifts and parties, watching live theater, and visiting a children’s museum or a nature reserve

El Desarrollo de Zest
Cada escuela en el Distrito Escolar de South Whittier está
enfocando su programa de educación de carácter para enfocarse
en el desarrollo de "zest" en nuestros estudiantes durante el mes
de octubre. ¿Qué es "zest"? Esto significa que cada niño
abrazará cada día con entusiasmo y se acercará al día con
emoción.
¿Cómo puede ayudar a mi hijo/a desarrollar “Zest”?
Los niños son naturalmente energéticos y entusiastas. Sin
embargo, hasta las personas más entusiastas experimentan baja
energía en algún momento. Hay algunos trucos para tener un
poco más de entusiasmo en la vida.
Estas son algunas maneras en que puedes fomentar este rasgo en casa:
- Zest puede ser encontrado en las cosas hermosas que nos rodean. Admirar el atardecer, recoger flores del jardín, o escuchar un instrumentó.
- Promover opciones de estilo de vida saludable: comer una comida lentamente y juntos. ir a caminar juntos para promover más actividad física diaria.
- Construir entusiasmo por la vida a través de cuentos historiales, cocinando, leyendo historia, regalos y fiesta sorpresas, viajes al teatro, y visitar a un museo de niños.
