Organization For Social Media Safety Visits Graves Middle School

The Organization for Social Media Safety visited Graves Middle School on Thursday, August 29, to hep educate students and families about social media awareness and best practices.

The Organization for Social Media Safety is a non-profit organization that was founded by Ed Peisner in 2017. Peisner began this organization after his son Jordan’s vicious attack was filmed and posted on social media and was shared and viewed thousands of times. After his son’s attack he became an advocate for social media safety and passed Jordan’s Law in California that was the nation’s first law to deter assault committed for the purpose of being filmed and distributed on social media.

During the day Ed Peisner came to Graves to speak to students. Peisner shared his and his son’s story and what Jordan’s Law is. He then gave a presentation that discussed best practices for protecting yourself and how to respond to cyberbullying, harassment, hate speech, trafficking and propaganda. He taught students how to configure and audit social profiles for protection and privacy and shared tips for preventing social media addiction and how to avoid what is called “Facebook depression”.

Peisner’s purpose with students was to teach them how to stay safe on social media as well as how to become positive social media citizens.

In the evening Ed Peisner did a special presentation for parents and guardians. In this presentation he covered the same information he shared with students as well as an overview of social media threats and dangers, a description of each social media platform, and sites to avoid and be aware of. Lastly, he recommended apps and system settings to protect your student while using social media. All attendees received a handout that had descriptions of all social media tips.

“Social media is a part of our scholars lives,” Graves principal, Dr. Trena Salcedo-Gonzalez, shared. “They need to know the dangerous sides of it and learn how to think critically to stay safe and informed.”
