SWSD Superintendent Hosts Welcome Event For Teachers and Staff

South Whittier School District’s Superintendent, Dr. Gary Gonzales, hosted a Welcome event for all teachers and staff on Wednesday, August 14, to kick off the new school year.

 

The welcome was an opportunity for all of the South Whittier teachers and staff to come together to hear South Whittier’s updated student data, new programs beginning this year, enjoy coffee and refreshments, and hear an encouraging word from the Superintendent. 

 

Dr. Gonzales shared that student test data showed growth that was made in both English Language Arts and Math. He shared that “growth is growth” and that he was proud that there was no regression, only improvement. He also honored specific teachers who’s students improved on their test scores.

 

“Thank you so much for what you have done for this district and for what you continue to do. Thank you,” he stated.

 

Dr. Gonzales then talked about the new programs that are being brought to the district this year. Loma Vista Elementary is implementing a Project Lead the Way STEM Program, Graves Middle School began a Medical Core Pathway Class, Dual Immersion Program began at McKibben Elementary and at Los Altos Elementary, and lastly, a districtwide mental health program led by a licensed clinical social worker has been implemented.

 

Attendees were then read the district’s mission. 

 

“The South Whittier School District holds students and staff to rigorous standards in order to prepare every scholar for 21st Century success in college and the workforce, within a safe and supportive environment. Our students are challenged to reach their full potential and develop their curiosity and thirst for discovery. Our district celebrates our families’ diverse traditions, cultures, and languages as foundations for learning.”

 

Dr. Gonzales encouraged teachers to find greatness in every student. He went on to share that teaching goes far beyond moving students from grade to grade.

 

“You don’t know what you do or what you say that will be a turning point in a students life.”

 

He encouraged teachers to celebrate the greatness in each student and to make sure that every students knows of their greatness.
