Project Light the Way Leader Recognition

The South Whittier School District board members and administration honored a teacher and students from Graves Middle School for their work on Project Light the Way.

Graves Middle School teacher, Mrs. Vega-Jeter shared about the project. She shared that the project began when Oliver Maldonado, a seventh grader at Graves Middle School, was struck by a car while crossing in the crosswalk to Mayberry Park. It was this tragedy that prompted his classmates to begin an effort to secure a safer crosswalk for their community. That effort became known as “Project Light the Way.”

The board and administration honored Mrs. Vega-Jeter for leading students throughout this project as well as students Mone’t Carter, Andrea Prillwitz and Alison Collachio. These ladies demonstrated leadership throughout the project. They addressed Supervisor Janice Hahn at  the LA Supervisors meeting where they testified about the need for a safer LED crosswalk. They went on to be selected by the Fourth District as Janice Hahn’s  "Women of the Year.” These ladies became the youngest ever to receive this prestigious award!

Thank you Mrs.Vega-Jeter, Mone’t Carter, Andrea Prillwitz and Alison Collachio for making a positive impact on our community!

Board members were able to see data from student test scores on the SBAC in both English Language Arts and math. Tyrone then shared about their action plan derived from this data that includes plan, do, analyze, and reflect. They also do goal setting, progress monitoring, performance tasks, and much more.

CVRA Public Hearing On Map Options

South Whittier School District held a public hearing regarding the process of transitioning the method by which Governing Board members are elected. In this meeting the community was able to provide input regarding the four map scenarios.

Each scenario showed a different option for how trustee areas could be broken up. Each scenario is in compliance with the Federal Voting Rights Act and achieves population equality as nearly as is practical.

The district will hold two more public hearings to allow for community input before the board makes a decision regarding which map scenario will be chosen.
