Carmela Student Represents SWSD in LA County Spelling Bee

Carmela Elementary School student, Leah Guillen, represented South Whittier School District at the LA County Regional Spelling Bee on March 20th at Almansor Court in Alhambra.

The LA County Regional Spelling Bee was hosted by the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) and this event was the first in-person Spelling Bee held by the organization since 2020. The Spelling Bee had 42 spellers who participated from public, private and charter schools across the county. All participants were the winners from their home district.

The 42 participants battled it out through 12 rounds. Leah Guillan, a fourth-grader at Carmela Elementary School, did an amazing job representing South Whittier.

“Leah represented South Whittier in the regional spelling bee competing against 42 other spellers from around LA County,” Dr. Marti Ayala, South Whittier’s Associate Superintendent of Human Resources, shared. “Students who participate in spelling bees not only increase their spelling skills, but they also develop stronger cognitive abilities and learning strategies. We are so proud of Leah, she gave it her best!”

Leah Guillen won the South Whittier School District Spelling Bee that was held on Thursday, January 25th, at Loma Vista Elementary. SWSD Spelling Bee contestants consisted of the top four spellers from grades fourth through sixth from each elementary school in the district. After many rigorous rounds, Leah was the winner.

Congratulations, Leah! South Whittier School District is proud of you!
