SWSD Celebrates Successful Launch of Inaugural Summer Language Academy

South Whittier School District celebrated a significant milestone with an Open House and Awards Ceremony held on Tuesday, July 9, at Graves Middle School honoring students who participated in the District's inaugural Summer Language Academy. The event marked the successful completion of an innovative four-week educational experience designed to strengthen bilingualism, biliteracy, and academic achievement in both Spanish and English.
The program was developed through a unique partnership with California State University, Fullerton and represents the culmination of nearly two years of thoughtful planning, research, and collaboration. District administrators and educators dedicated extensive time to studying successful language academy models, visiting schools with established programs, and identifying best practices to ensure students would receive a high-quality learning experience.
Twenty-seven students successfully completed the four-week program, receiving instruction in both Spanish and English. To provide an exceptional learning environment, the District staffed two dual language classrooms, each supported by three highly qualified teachers. This unique instructional model allowed for personalized attention, collaborative teaching, and meaningful opportunities for students to develop language proficiency while building academic confidence.
The program was further strengthened through the expertise of two California State University, Fullerton professors, who partnered with South Whittier educators throughout the summer. Their collaboration provided the curriculum and valuable instructional support and reinforcing the District's commitment to implementing research-based practices that promote student success.
The celebration began with welcoming remarks from program teacher Flor Garcia, who reflected on how this program came to be and the meaningful experiences shared throughout the four-week journey. Families then had the opportunity to visit classrooms, where students proudly showcased projects, classroom activities, and the language skills they had developed during the program.
The event concluded with a special awards ceremony recognizing each student's dedication and accomplishments. Every participant received a certificate celebrating the successful completion of the District's inaugural Summer Language Academy.
As South Whittier School District continues expanding innovative learning opportunities, the success of this inaugural program represents an exciting step toward preparing students to thrive in an increasingly multilingual and globally connected world. The District looks forward to building upon this foundation and creating even more opportunities for students to develop the valuable skills that come with bilingual education.
