SWSD January Board Meeting Recap

South Whittier School District held its monthly Board meeting on Tuesday, January 20. The Board received three presentations: an Academic Achievement Report from Graves Middle School, a Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) update, and a mid-year update on the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).
Graves Middle School Academic Achievement Report
Graves Middle School Principal Mr. Hernandez presented an overview of the school’s academic performance based on data from the California Dashboard, which measures key indicators such as academic achievement, attendance, and English learner progress.
Mr. Hernandez compared the school’s 2025 results with 2024 data to highlight progress and identify areas for improvement. The presentation also recognized the Graves Middle School ASB Leadership team and their advisors for their contributions to campus culture. Mr. Hernandez noted that ASB supports the district’s mission by fostering leadership, responsibility, and teamwork, helping to create a safe, inclusive, and connected school environment.
Visual and Performing Arts Presentation
District Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) Gerardo Carvajal presented an overview of South Whittier’s Visual and Performing Arts programs. Current offerings include dance, general music, instrumental music, visual arts, mariachi, art club, band, orchestra, and guitar.
Mr. Carvajal also shared the district’s three-year strategic plan for VAPA, which focuses on expanding inclusive and culturally relevant instruction, strengthening community partnerships, and developing sustainable systems and funding to support program growth. The presentation highlighted existing partnerships, upcoming events, and outreach efforts.
LCAP Mid-Year Update
Associate Superintendent of Educational Services Dr. Rebecca Rodriguez provided a mid-year update on the district’s Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). The report reviewed outcome data tied to LCAP metrics and summarized expenditures and progress on planned actions.
Dr. Rodriguez outlined the district’s five LCAP goals: culture and climate, continuous improvement, educator leadership, family and community engagement, and multi-tiered systems of support.
