Loma Vista Teachers Attend CGI Conference

Loma Vista Elementary teachers attended Downey Unified School District’s Cognitive Guided Instruction Conference on Saturday, September 8, to build relationships across various districts and work together to continue to cultivate students' math minds and allow all students to make sense of math.

“Teachers attended sessions that provided powerful routines along with intentional questioning that supports students with number sense, fluency, and critical thinking,” Loma Vista principal, Kristine Carreon, shared.

Cognitive Guided Instruction, or CGI, is a student-centered approach to teaching math. Instruction is facilitated by the teacher and focuses on asking questions and engaging with the way students process and understand math. Students are also encouraged to communicate with their teachers and peers about their problem solving strategies.

This is the first CGI Conference that Downey Unified has put together, though they plan to make this an annual event.
