SWSD April Board Meeting Recap

South Whittier School District held their monthly board meeting on Tuesday, April 16, in-person in the district board room and via Zoom.

This board meeting included two presentations, a Dual Language Immersion Program presentation and a Student Achievement Report.

Dual Language Immersion Program Presentation

Associate Superintendent of Educational Services, Dr. Rebecca Rodriguez, shared about South Whittier’s Dual Language Immersion program.

The presentation shared a program overview. This included when the program began, where the district offers the programs, instructional practice, and professional development, their research-based decision making and what their Star testing has shown, and the presentation closed with students' testimonials.

Four Dual Language Immersion students were in attendance at the board meeting and answered questions from board members in Spanish. Students were able to share in front of all attendees why they have enjoyed being in this program. Parents of some of these students also spoke about their student’s growth and academic success they have seen through the program.

Student Achievement Update Presentation

Director of Assessments, Accountability, and Parent Engagement, Dr. Reanna Mendoza, gave a student achievement update presentation.

This accountability update reviewed CAASPP data dating back to Spring 2019. Dr. Mendoza went over the CAASPP results and California Dashboard to show where the district and students landed in performance and share the State education priorities. Since students are currently gearing up to begin this year’s CAASPP testing later this month, Mendoza shared the Star testing data from the beginning of the year to the year to date to show students' progress.

Lastly, the presentation included how the district is supporting students in math and ELA instruction as well as their social and emotional well-being.

The district will hold their next board meeting on Tuesday, May 14, at the district office and via Zoom.
