Graves Middle School Holds AVID Information Night for Elementary School Parents

Graves Middle School held an AVID information night at McKibben Elementary Monday, March 5, to inform South Whittier School District elementary parents about their AVID program.

Dan Honeycutt, Graves Middle School’s AVID Coordinator, shared with parents about Grave’s AVID and AVID Excel programs. As a National AVID Demonstration school, Graves is a leading site for the AVID program being in the top 3% of all AVID schools in the nation.

“It was a pleasure to share information about our AVID program with parents and the community. The parents were very excited about the AVID program and asked good questions,” Dan Honeycutt stated. “They were impressed that we are an AVID National Demonstration Site. They liked that this means we are in the top 3% of all of the AVID schools in the nation.”

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID trains teachers to use strategies that best prepare students for high school and college readiness. This training helps students develop strong critical thinking skills, literacy, and math skills. AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap and make college access available to every student.

Some AVID strategies that are incorporated into instruction at Graves Middle School includes binder checks to encourage student organization, the use of academic language from both teachers and students, tutorials, and WICOR strategies, which stands for writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading.
