SWSD May Board Meeting Recap

South Whittier School District held their monthly board meeting Tuesday, May 21, at the district office. The district honored students from Loma Vista Elementary, participants and partners that contributed in the Whittier Area Community Resource Fair, and Lake Marie teachers and staff.

 

Loma Vista Elementary Student Recognition

 

Loma Vista Elementary principal, Kristine Carreon, recognized students who have been reclassified from English Learners to fluent English Speakers this school year. Carreon congratulated students for their dedication and hard work and gave each student a certificate of achievement. 

 

Whittier Area Community Resource Fair Partner Recognition

 

The South Whittier School board and administration honored partners that participated and made the Whittier Area Community Resource Fair possible. 

 

Director of Assessment, Accountability, and Parent Engagement, Dr. Stacy Ayers-Escarcega, spoke on behalf of the district thanking the organizations that partnered with South Whittier to make the event possible. She recognized each volunteer and gave them a certificate of appreciation.

 

South Whittier School District along with Supervisor Janice Hahn’s office, The Community Resource Center, Think Together, The Education Foundation and other community health partners all hosted the annual Whittier Area Healthy Living and Resource Fair on Saturday, May 4, at Carmela Elementary.

 

The goal of the fair is to promote and provide resources for building a healthy community. There were many different booths that provided physical and mental health resources. 

 

Lake Marie Recognition Teacher & Staff Recognition

 

Lake Marie’s principal, Lisa Palomino, honored teachers and classified staff at the board meeting for their dedication and hard work that has earned Lake Marie the honor of being named one of the Top Los Angeles Public Schools for Underserved Students.

 

“All members of our school every day show their passion for our students and their needs. So it is my honor to recognize our staff.”

 

All 35 teachers and staff members from Lake Marie were recognized.

 

Lake Marie Elementary is one of the 279 schools being recognized this year in the first annual report Top Los Angeles Public Schools for Underserved Students in collaboration with the University of Southern California Sol Price Center for Social Innovation and Rossier School of Education Center for Education Policy, Equity and Governance. Lake Marie is being recognized  based on their strong results in English and/or math proficiency for low-income African American and/or low-income Latino students in 2017-18.
