Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

PBIS in South Whittier

In SWSD, we commit to prioritizing and sustaining the implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to improve school culture and enhance academic excellence, behavioral and social-emotional development for our students.

We hope to create a trauma-responsive climate where staff collaboratively foster consistent, predictable, and safe learning environments. We will build capacity amongst staff through ongoing professional development

Our ultimate goal is to nurture a lasting positive and equitable school climate that supports our students’ social emotional growth and academic achievement so that they will be prepared and successful in their futures.

All schools implement Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports to teach school-wide expectations and respond to behavior.

What is Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)?

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives.

Educators and practitioners provide a continuum of academic, behavioral, social, and emotional support matched to students’ needs. We describe this continuum across three tiers of support.

Tier 3 systems, data, and practices support  a small number of students who need intensive and individualized support.

Tier 2 systems, data, and practices support students needing an added layer of support that targets their specific needs.

Tier 1 systems, data, and practices support everyone – students, educators, and staff – across all school settings.

For more information regarding PBIS at your child’s school, please refer to the PBIS Handbook featured on their website

5th

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a helpful way to support students with their behavior, academics, social skills, emotions, and mental health. When done well, PBIS helps students become better at handling their emotions, doing well in school, and making the school a positive place for everyone.

Teachers and other helpers offer different levels of help with schoolwork, behavior, and emotions based on what students need. We sort this help into three levels.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a system for helping students with their behavior, school work, feelings, and mental health. When used correctly, PBIS helps students do better in school and feel good about themselves. It is a method to make sure schools are positive, fair, and safe places where everyone can do well.

Teachers and people who work with students give different kinds of help with school work, behavior, feelings, and emotions based on what each student needs. We organize this help into three tiers.
